Apple Is Likely To Make Its Own Large Television Screens

Rumors have been circulating for the past year that Apple will make a TV screen. Apple has ventured into the TV market before with its Apple TV, which is a receiver box for digital media but has only seen limited success. There are some compelling reasons to think that Apple might be going for something bigger by producing its own TV screens.

If Apple simply wanted to provide a means for accessing digital media through an Apple product then it's likely that it would stick with its Apple TV. Apple TV allows uses to play digital media from the iTunes store and other digital media outlets such as Hulu Plus, YouTube, Nextflix, etc. It has competition from other streaming devices such as Roku, YouView and upgrades on some flat screen TVs offered by LG and Samsung. Access to media is what Apple TV provides, but producing a separate TV screen is a whole different proposition.

Buying a television, particularly one that is large and full of digital media add-ons, is a significant investment for most consumers. The average American only buys a TV once every eight years or so. One of the reasons that that Apple may be considering producing its own TV is that if a consumer purchases one of its TV, that purchase is an investment in Apple for eight years or so. That consumer is not likely to turn around and buy another TV the following year. If the TV is compatible with other Apple devices then the purchaser of the TV is more likely to continue its investment with Apple. The TV can keep consumers hooked to Apple products for a longer period of time.

The TV business is not a business with large margins, but Apple might not care if its goal is to keep consumers linked to its devices, particularly those devices that do carry with them larger profit margins like iPhones and iPads. It's not a bad strategy for Apple to follow when brand loyalty is a priority.
Another reason that Apple may want to produce a TV is that ultimately Apple is a hardware company. Apple is not known for its software in the same way it is for its hardware and specifically the well-crafted and highly stylized design of its hardware. A television is a piece of hardware and Apple may have its sights on producing large television screens with its own design concepts.

The rumors will probably continue to circulate until Apple makes its own announcement that an Apple television screen is imminent. If Apple does manage to pull off the production of a large TV screen you can bet that it will be as beautiful as the things you might view on it.
